Zombie School Attack ... the backstory

About 10 years ago my daughter (about 10 yo at the time) was having problems with math in school.

Math is boring, she said.

Say what what ??? ... I always loved math ... so I thought it was really strange she didn't.

I mean, she was exceptional clever ... but she just didn't seem to get math.

---

To try help her I bought some math games she could play on her pc.

But, those games were just no fun at all !

Lousy game design ... bad craftsmanship.

---

Do educational games have to be boring ?

I think not ... in my understanding, one of the core (bio) mechanics of all games is the joy of learning.

The joy of playing Mario is the joy of learning to play Mario.  It is great to feel you are getting better.  It is nice that the feedback loop is so tight.

Playing and learning has, I think, much in common.

If children will happily spend 100's of hours playing Mario etc. ... why not try make a fun game where you could learn something that is actually useful in the real world  ... like math ?

---

So, I gave the problem some good thought ... and made a small prototype in good ole Gamemaker (8.1).

My daughter really liked the game ... we discussed it a lot ... she came up with a lot of good ideas ... and soon she started to like math a great deal more :)

---

After this I started making a Unity version as a hobby project.

The project has been dormant for some years, but now I'll try resurrect it here at Itch.

I hope the game can help more kids discover the fun in math.
